Orr builds installations that combine the movement of water, light and object and examines the function and physicality of skin through creating damaged, torn and multilayered skins using polymers. She explores skin as a physical barrier as well as its existence as a mental protection layer. Orr is inspired by the world of psychoanalysis (namely Didier Anzieu) borrowing its terminology and imagery such as: primary skin, secondary skin, protective shield, perforated encasing. In her practice there is strong reference to the organic and natural growth incubators. Incubators as containers: from cocoons to eggs as well as the spaces and contents in which we live, become and grow, for instance a Toddlers House in the Kibbutz, in Orr’s case. From sloughing through shells and bags, Orr’s containers are flooded, perforated, ripped until gaping open, and of impaired functionality.

Tamar Orr studied performing arts: space, light and costume design at Tel Aviv University completing her BA studies with Honors. Thereafter she completed her Master of Art degree in Rose Bruford College in London in Lighting and Installation. Tamar designed lighting for theatre and dance productions in Israel and worldwide, as well as exhibiting installations which combine light, object and sensors. She studied fine arts in a private course led by the artist Michal Heiman, and in further independent courses in Machon Avni, Kibbutz Artist Workshop and Bait Le’Omanut. She taught lighting and installation at the Theatre Arts department in Seminar Hakibbutzim College and is represented by the gallery Artspace Tel Aviv.
